Accessibility Directorate
The Government of Nova Scotia’s Accessibility Directorate is responsible for administering the Accessibility Act and advancing disability issues within government.
We collaborate with persons with disabilities, municipalities, businesses, post-secondary institutions, and others to achieve the goal of an accessible Nova Scotia by 2030.
Accessibility standards
Accessibility standards are laws that governments, businesses, non-profit organizations, and public sector organizations must follow to become more accessible.
The first accessibility standard is now law:
- Built Environment Accessibility Standard – making buildings and outdoor spaces like trails, parks and beaches accessible. The Government is also developing accessibility standards in the following areas:

- Education – making the education system accessible for students with disabilities
- Employment – making workplaces accessible and supporting people with disabilities in finding meaningful employment
- Goods and Services – making sure that people with disabilities have equitable access to goods and services
- Information and Communication – making sure people with disabilities can receive, understand and share the information they need
- Public Transportation – making it easier for people with disabilities to get where they need to go
