Rick Hansen Foundation Accessibility Certificate Program at NSCC

Dates:
April 9, 10, 11, 12, 30 & May 1 – NSCC Akerley Campus, 21 Woodlawn Road, Dartmouth NS
May 2, 3 – NSCC Ivany Campus, 80 Mawiomi Place, Dartmouth NS

Time: 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM

Course fee: $1,600 – The Nova Scotia Department of Community, Culture and Heritage with the Nova Scotia Accessibility Directorate is providing a tuition bursary of $800 towards the costs for eligible applicants. (Payment is due upon acceptance to secure your space).

 Registration fee: $800 (Includes tuition bursary)

* In addition, the Province will cover the cost of the RHFAC Professional Exam, facilitated by the CSA (Canadian Standards Association) if the exam is taken within 6 months following the end of the course.

Overview

This course is the first step towards qualifying you to conduct ratings under the Rick Hansen Foundation Accessibility Certification™ (RHFAC) program.

Through this course, using a LEED-style rating system, you learn how to evaluate the accessibility of a building or site. You develop a strong understanding of Universal Design in a variety of settings and how to identify positive access features or barriers to people with physical, sensory, learning and developmental disabilities.

Program highlights

Course topics include:

  • The impact of social and built environments on people with physical, sensory, learning and developmental disabilities
  • An overview of universal design principles
  • Interpreting construction and project plans
  • Integrating relevant legislation, regulations, and standards when planning and executing accessibility assessments

Admission requirements

  • You have a diploma of technology in architecture, engineering, urban planning, interior design or a related program; or
  • You have a Journeyman Certificate of Qualification in a designated trade related to building construction; or
    • You are an engineer (or eligibility for registration as an engineer); or
    • You are an architect (or eligibility for registration as an architect); or
  • You have a minimum of five years of construction experience

Program requirements

  • You must attend 48 hours of training, which includes a 20-hour practicum
  • To receive the RHFAC professional designation, you must:
    • Pass the RHFAC Assessor Training Course
    • Pass the RHFAC Professional Exam, facilitated by the CSA (Canadian Standards Association) Group
